Mastering the Foundations of Qigong 10 Month Program

Mastering the Foundations of Qigong, 10 month program:

I've been studying Qigong for 22 years and Zhineng Gong for 18, during that time I had the good luck of studying with many teachers including my main teacher Hai Yang who was a direct student of many of the most famous Qigong masters during the golden age of Qigong in the 1980s and 90s. I also spent more than a decade learning to read classical and modern Chinese, studying Daoist Meditation and Yang Sheng, as well as dipping my toes in Chinese Medicine and Buddhist studies (especially the Tian Tai tradition and its Yang Sheng methods).

Over the last couple years I've increased the number of courses on topics like Yang Sheng and Nei Gong and this has served as a good way to establish the foundations required for doing something profound with the art I've been studying the longest, Qigong...

Qigong is much deeper than most people know, it is based on profound practices and concepts from Daoism, Buddhism, Chinese and Bio-Medicine, Psychology, and much more. However, there are many Qigong systems and they all have different theories.

Because of my specialized experience with Daoist methods and relatively deep research into the middle school of Daoist internal alchemy, I feel especially focused on disseminating the core methods and concepts of Zhineng Qigong, a style created by Prof. Pang Ming which is deeply based on the Heavenly Original Alchemy method of Daoist meditation (the one I specialize in).

However, I don't want to be just another garden variety Qigong teacher, I want to offer something special and complete that would be impossible to find anywhere else, at least not in the English language.

As such, I've decided to give a ten month deep dive into the practices and theory of Zhineng Qigong's first stage of practice, the External Hun Yuan cultivation stage, but not just from the perspective of Zhineng Gong which is already quite popular, instead we will go deep into the background material Pang used to design his method.

My teacher always told me that Pang used to invite him and other students to his studio and show them the books in his library that he used to help him design the style.

I've also read Pang's work extensively in Chinese and listened to all his available lectures, and while perhaps you have already read his books or heard translations of his lectures, I think my analysis of his ideas will be deeply enlightening to you since I can help you understand his terminology and ideas according to their native context in Daoism and the other schools of thought he borrows from.

This is going to be a really intense and deep overview of the first third of the methods of the Zhineng Qigong system and I can't imagine that there has ever been a Qigong course taught in English that could possibly go this deep, that is if you think it is important to understand the origin of the practices Pang uses in his system.

Not only will you learn the entire Peng Qi Guan Ding Fa method of Zhineng Qigong in this course, you will also learn many influential Daoist and Nei Gong techniques that influenced Pang's creation of the style.

Right out of the gate we will start with explaining Pang's Hun Yuan Qi Complete Theory and how to open the Bai Hui, something very important in Daoist and Chinese Buddhist practices which allows for all the meridians of the body to gradually connect during meditation, or in this case, Qigong practice.

From there we will go on to learn how to connect the inner and outer Qi of the body in detail and according to many classical texts from all major eras of Daoist history.

I'm really excited to offer this course which will include weekly lectures, translations, and videos of Qigong practice for you to learn from.

I want to keep this class as high quality as possible so I am limiting enrollment to 15 students.

I expect it to sell out very fast, so make sure to claim your spot ASAP.

Program contents by month:

Month 1: Philosophical and Historical Foundations of Qigong and Pushing the Qi to the Sky Gate:

In the first month we will begin our study of the philosophy and history of Qigong from the perspective of Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and classical Dao Yin, visualization and breathing practices relative to Pang Ming's Hun Yuan Zhengti concept.

Our practices will revolve around methods of opening the Bai Hui cavity, a core aspect of Daoist and Buddhist practice which Pang adapted into his Zhineng Qigong system.

Our classes will focus on the following documents (all translated by me):

  • Dao De Jing Chan Wei chapter 1 (the only Dao De Jing annotation to teach the text according to Neidan theory),
  • excerpts from Laozi Zhong Jing and the Lesser Daoist Canon (early body deity practices used to open the Bai Hui/Sky Gate),
  • Sun Simiao Qi methods chapter (used for connecting the Bai Hui to Dantian and body meridians),
  • Overview of Zhineng Qigong Study Arts from Simplified Clarification of Zhineng Qigong Study by Pang Ming,
  • Hun Yuan Zheng Ti theory of chapter of Simplified Clarification of Zhineng Qigong Study,

Methods taught:

  • methods from the classical texts to develop Qi in the Bai Hui and rest of the body,
  • Introductory practice of Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method of Zhineng Qigong and ending postures (basic movements and intention of the first small set learned in Zhineng Gong practice),

Month 2: The Activity of the Mind:

In the second month we will learn the background of the use of Yi/Intention/Mind in Qigong practice beginning with early Daoist practices which understand Shen/Spirit as mind, through the development of the Pre-Heaven/Post-Heaven Mind concepts of the Southern School of Neidan, and into the modern era where mind is understood as intention.

Modern Qigong systems especially emphasize the cultivation of mind as the director of the body Qi and most practitioners do not sufficiently investigate this approach, in the classes this month we will work on rectifying this and teach powerful methods of commanding Qi with the intention while simultaneously understanding ancient applications of mind from the perspective of Daoism and the internal arts.

Documents taught in month two:

  • Dao De Jing comments on the use of the heart, embracing the one, non-action, and breath heart connection,
  • Early concepts of healing the body with intention from Tao Hongjing's Nurturing Nature and Extending Life Discussion.
  • Poetry from Understanding Reality by Zhang Boduan on the use of the “matchmaker,”
  • Early reference from Xing Ming Gui Zhi about the use of the mind as the commander of the Qi (where the mind arrives the Qi arrives) and why Daoism views this as a problematic subject,
  • Sections from the Truth of the Martial Arts by Sun Lutang on the use of mind in Xingyi, Taiji and Bagua,
  • Simplified Clarification of Zhineng Qigong Study chapter 4: important points of the use of the perceptual mind in Zhineng Qigong,

Methods taught:

  • Ancient Daoist methods for treating pain with mental focus and visualization from Nurturing Nature and Extending Life and the Lesser Daoist Canon,
  • Autogenic Exercises for body relaxation,
  • Zhineng Qigong Zhu Chang Qi Adjustment (whole body organ Qi transmission Jing Gong),
  • Combination of Autogenic Exercises with Qigong approach,
  • Continue to work on Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method

Months 3 -5 : Advancing the Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method:

In these months you will learn Pang's major theory of Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method and combine it with the practices you already know.

This month's classes will especially emphasize Zhineng Qigong concepts and methods while drawing on what you have already learned in the past two units.

By this time you will already have attained Qi on the Sky Gate, so we will work toward creating a fluid exchange of External Hun Yuan Qi between the three levels of the aura and the inner body.

In this section you will not only learn the origins of Pang's ideas about Qigong, but also learn the full transmission of Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak including all the key anatomical sections known as the nine palaces and thirteen gates, Wuji as the burner and Taiji as the cauldron, and a full explanation of Pang's Eight Oral Formulas Practice Mantra and much more.

Documents taught in month 3 - 5:

  • Hu Haiya and Cheng Yingning's explanations of Heavenly Origin Alchemy,
  • Chen Yingning's notebook entry on the key methods of Heavenly Origin Alchemy (how to practice),
  • Chapter 8 of Simplified Clarification of Zhineng Qigong Study, Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method (essays include explanation of the method and how to practice),

Methods:

  • Full Pushing the Qi to Penetrate the Peak Method,
  • Supplementary Jing Gong exercises to cultivate the upper Dantian,
  • Three Hearts Combined Standing Method (a unique method of Zhan Zhuang which uses visualization to develop powerful energy in the body),

Month 6 – 10: Deep Analysis of External Hun Yuan Method:

During these months we will learn all three sections of Pushing the Qi to the Peak Method which is the major expression of the External Hun Yuan Qi Method of Zhineng Qigong and analyze it from the perspective of classic Dao Yin and Nei Gong.

This routine is the first of the three major routines of Zhineng Qigong and is used to connect the Qi around the body to the three levels of the aura and the inner body and organs. Master Pang said it was based on the Heavenly Origin School of Internal Alchemy and believed it to be a method of using the Qi of the Universe to cultivate the energetic body much faster than possible with methods mainly focused on cultivating the Qi of the body to spread it to the environment (what he refers to as Human Origin Alchemy),

Since we will have already read sufficiently from Pang's entries on these subjects, we will focus our reading on analysis of Dao Yin and Nei Gong postures incorporated into the movements.

Documents taught in months 6-10:

  • Illustrated Discussion of Neigong (Yi Jin Jing) including major theory and specific postures,
  • Various Daoist entries to help us understand concepts such as Wuji Burner and Taiji Cauldron and External Hunyuan.
  • Entries from Four Classics of Nei Gong (a famous Shanxi style Xingyi document),

Practices:

  • Complete all three sections of Pushing the Qi to the Peak Method,
  • full intention methods to build up and integrate the external Hun Yuan Qi with the aura and body,
  • Review Zhu Chang Qi Adjustment method and Xin Shu Shen Jing method (Upper Dantian sounding meditation to connect inner Qi and Shen to outer environment).

This course is likely the only one like it and I think it can offer deeper insight into Qigong than commonly available outside of a very focused traditional format in China.

This is a very special course and a great opportunity for students and teachers of Qigong. Even if you are already at an advanced level of practice I think you will find many treasures in this program which will improve your understanding of these profound arts.
